Dental Treatment Abroad

" Excellent communication from the outcome. The clinic looks after it's patient and Dr. Marek is an outstading dentist. I would recommend Piestany Dental Clinic to anybody as I am over the moon with the final result of my teeth.
They are perfect!"

Hi Daniel,
I didn't want to write an email too soon after my treatment, just IN CASE anything went wrong which, I am happy to report hasn't!! I wanted everything to settle down and for me to get used to the new teeth and my smile before writing the glowing report :)

When I came back home from the clinic, everybody was so eager to see my teeth, so the only thing that I've been doing since I got back is SMILE! All my friends think that the work done is amazing, and one particular friend can't stop looking at my mouth when I talk and I have to remind her to look me in the eyes, as I was getting quite self conscious about it :) ( but not in a bad way )

The miracle that Marek performed on my teeth is undoubtedly second to none, and I am so happy that I chose Piestany Dental Clinic to have my crowns etc done. I cannot rate it highly enough, and have emailed the website details to one or two people who are interested in having restorative work, either for themselves or for their children.

Please say a big hello to the girls for me and thank them for looking after me so well whilst I was there. I hope both you and Marek are well and that your charity work is good too.

Take care Daniel,

Max

tooth crowns / bridges abroad - how many visits are needed?

Piestany dental clinic in Slovakia has 2 ways to make crowns / veneers:

1. Hand-made in the dental lab, the whole preparing, baking, cooling and finishing process takes 6-8 working days, this cannot be sped up in any way. Therefore we ask patients to make 2 one day visits with 2 weeks between them. These crowns / veneers cost £199 per tooth.

2. Computerized CAD-CAM CEREC machines can make crowns in 1 day, but because of the high-quality, expensive material used - Zirconia - They cost £299 per tooth. We ask patients to stay for 4 days in this case because: on the 1st day the preparations are made to the teeth and impressions made, the crown/veneer is made on the next day, the next day it can be sent to the dental lab for final finishing and then can be fitted on the 4th day.

Weekly update on dental treatment abroad for UK patients

Five dentists earned €300,000 each in fees from taxpayers in Ireland.

The State payouts to 805 dentists exceeded €59m in total - despite claims by dentists, in recent years, that the scheme did not pay enough!

Another 20 dentists earned over €200,000 in gross payments, according to Health Service Executive figures obtained by the Irish Independent.

EVER SEEN A POOR DENTIST? THOUGHT NOT

There's a certain disbelief in hearing dentists complaining that they're spending a lot of time repairing what they call poor dental work which was done abroad on the cheap.

Without those fancy cosmetic dentistry treatment they've all been pushing over the last few years, they'd be better off considering the reasons people travel abroad for ordinary crowns and bridges in the first place: price.

Most of our patients have no problem going abroad to get a new smile. Not only do they save thousands, but the work quality is second to none.

They tell me that they got charged €100 for initial X-rays and scans which are always free in our clinic - what's that about?

People might be over-enthusiastic in getting too much work done at once, say the experts, especially when they're in far flung locations. But the customers know one thing...

They've never met a poor dentist in Ireland.

Unfair NHS dental payments

The apparent dissimilarity in price for UDAs across the country has caused concern, with one UDA in Westminster being found to cost around £20.19 - £105.58, while in Sandwell, a fairly disadvantaged area in the West Midlands, it is £11.08 - £45.83.

It must be hugely frustrating for many UK dentists to know that others just down the road are being paid so much more for doing very similar work.

I scream - Ice cream?

Summer is over and winter in near, but cold / hot food and drinks still leaves your teeth sensitive. Do you know how to deal with it?

Causes

The two main causes of tooth sensitivity are root surface exposure and grinding and clenching teeth.

Short-term treatment

Besides other dental issues including fractured teeth or decay, an exposed root surface often causes sensitivity. Avoid anything that's really acidic. Fizzy drinks and fruit juices, especially orange juice, should be avoided if you're suffering from sensitivity.

Toothpastes and chewing gum that has fluoride in them will definitely help in the short-term before you go for dental treatment abroad. Don't use whitening toothpastes because they tend to be more abrasive than other toothpastes and can make sensitivity worse. Products containing potassium nitrate, such as Sensodyne, are effective but should be for short-term use only.

Long-term treatment

The grinding and clenching issue is often overlooked, so we as dentists look for wear patterns and microfracture lines in teeth.

When microfracture lines or cracks get really severe they get dark and discolored and that can often be an indication for a porcelain crown.

Both root canal treatment and porcelain crowns can be done in just 1 visit abroad. This will stop any sensitivity you have for sure.

Mandi's new smile

Hi Daniel,

I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my new crowns, they are superb, thank you so much Dr Marek.
I can't thank you all enough for the treatment I received, the girls, Marian & all the staff made me feel so at ease.
From start to finish the treatment I received was so professional and caring, even when British Airways messed our flights up & we ended arriving much later than first anticipated you still managed to accommodate us. Dr Marek and the girls waited until 7.00
pm to see me & start my treatment. Thank you.

I will certainly be returning in the near future to have my bottom teeth fitted with crowns. I would highly recommend
your clinic.

Also it was a lovely break for Dean & me. We had some great meals, hotel was nice & the area was nice.

Once again thank you all so much.

Weekly update on dental treatment abroad for UK patients

I think this is a PR stunt because most UK dentists are bitter that they will be on lower wages soon for sure. IDA president, Dr Donal Blackwell, said common problems included too much dental work being done over too short a time frame (but why do UK dentists give just 15 minute slots?), unnecessary work being done (patients should always be shown their x-ray beforehand and have a no-pressure consulatation) and poor materials being used by dentists abroad. (Most dentists in central Europe have far better technology than the majority of UK clinics, just look at their websites to see).

I agree with this statement, but if the patient is already considering going abrod for dental treatment, then it is most likely to save costs, these include the "big" items such a mutliple white fillings / metal filling relacements, mutliple root canals, all cermaic crowns, veneers and dental implants. 98% of our patients will have one or a combination of these treatments, and for all of these treatments I can quote through email exaclt how much it will cost and if we are provided with a photograph or x-ray too, we'll know exactly what's needed.

Alan Long is now paying £39 for the trip to london (a cheap flight to a clinic abroad can be cheaper than that) to solve his toothache. Apparently he can't get a local NHS dentist.

Our dentists wages don't just go in their pockets

A portion of the money spent by all our UK patients goes towards supporting those who, due to unfortunate circumstances, cannot get ahead in life.

Piestany Dental Clinic sponsors each month, a Kenyan boy called Job, who is an orphan raised in a childrens home, and now hopes to complete his studies and get a stable job.

I have met Job personally 3 times now during my frequent trips to the slums of Nairobi to work in the children's home there. Here's Job's most recent letter:

"Hello Daniel,

How are you and every one? I hope that God has Kept all safe and in good health, on the other hand I am well too, I am doing well at school though with quite substantial difficulties but this won’t deviate me from my vision of being a responsible whole rounded accountant.

To begin with I would like to appreciate very much for support that I receive from you monthly, it is so significant to me so much that without it I will totally not proceed with anything.

I appreciate a lot for the fact that I am lucky to receive this much else I will have nothing. This money is not enough for my monthly expenses and it forces me to forgo meals that to have one meal a day, sometimes I am also forced to walk to school and also I lack school materials that need to be photocopied or in the case of presenting typed work I present handwritten work which makes me lose marks. This money is partitioned into ksh3000 for accommodation, 300 electricity, 50 for water, 200 for email, 150 for telephone, 300 for school related materials, 1000 for food and 1000 for transport.

In contrast, I need transport of 3000, food of ksh50 per meal and 3 times a day for a whole month, I mean the allocation I have so far is not enough and any kind of help will be so much appreciated from any one willing, even just a single meal per day will be of great value to me.

Though I have so much difficulty, I appreciate my father in heaven for knows me by name and He is real helping me. Well I must also acknowledge your assistance and say thanks and thanks again and God bless you so much.

I dedicate to you all much love, gratitude and greetings.

Job"

Being a Dentist in the UK is one of the best paid jobs

Figures revealed this week show that dentist are earning up to £300,000 a year in England and Wales.

The NHS information centre showed that out of 19,000 practicing dentists in the country 382 earned over £300,000 including expenses, 113 dentists earned £275,000 to £300,000, while 159 earned £250,000 to £275,000.

The average annual income of a dentist is over £89,000 with one top dentist reported to be earning over £380,000.

Of the 19,000 dentist working in England and Wales around 7,500 have contract with the Local Primary Care Trust, or the Local Health Board.

The figures released could not be compared to any previous year’s earnings as the due to the calculation process being done differently.

Chief Executive of the NHS Information Centre, Tim Straughton, said: "The England and Wales report looks at earnings of in the second year of the new contractual system and reveals the average earnings of NHS dentists varies greatly depending on whether they personally held a contract with their primary care organisation."

The contract was introduced by the government in the hope that it would put an end to the critics of the ‘drill and fill’ culture that surfaces as a result of dentists being paid per filling. The contract was introduced in April 2006 and means that dentist are now paid for every piece of dental activity and the type of treatment taken.

Is that why dental treatment in the UK costs so much? Have you thought about going abroad for your dental treatment, saving over 50%, no waiting time, and having it all done in just 2-3 visits instead of 10 5-10 minute slots over 1 year?

Why are NHS dentists failing?

UK dentists are now paid a flat rate covering the amount of work they are contracted to do each year, which is measured in UDAs (units of dental activity). In theory, at least, there is both greater guarantee of access as well as more emphasis on clinical and preventative dentistry (you are paid the same amount for 1 filling as for 6).

Crucially, the new contract also simplified the complex pay structure for dentistry (unlike other areas of the public health system, you do pay a nominal fee to see a National Health Service dentist). The previously highly complex payment structure of more than £400 charges is now divided into three bands: roughly £16 for a check-up or minor treatment, £44 for fillings, root canal work or extractions and £198 for crowns, dentures or bridges.
So far, so good. Right?

Well, actually not. While these reforms were supposed to increase access to NHS dentists, in practice, they’ve had the opposite effect. NHS estimates suggest that nearly 1 million fewer people have access to an NHS dentist than they did three years ago. According to a citizen’s advice survey carried out in early 2008, approximately 7.4 million people hadn’t been to an NHS dentist since April 2006 because of difficulties in finding one. In light of these access problems, many Brits simply do without a dentist or go abroad through www.dentalholiday.co.uk for treatments. (The NHS acknowledges that there is an access problem, but argues that it is closing the gap, I don't see that gap closing.)

Not surprisingly, the new system also makes NHS work less attractive for dentists. Before Tony Blair became prime minister in 1997, only 6 percent of dentists’ income came from private patients. By 2006, it was 58 percent. The first month that the new contract went into effect, some 2,000 dentists (about 10 percent) refused to sign the new contracts and left the NHS altogether, while many more signed "in protest." Many of the dentists I’ve talked to informally have complained about the "assembly line" feel of the new target-driven system.

The incentives set up by the new system also mean that dentists are more likely to "under-treat," i.e., to fail to provide complex (and costly) treatment, even if it’s clinically necessary. After all, they are now paid the same to perform a root canal as they are to extract a tooth. Not surprisingly, the number of complex procedures has dropped precipitously in the last few years.

And that's where we come in. A UK accredited dental clinic abroad with almost no waiting times, just 2-3 visit necessary for the largest cases, a friendly, personal clinic with much lower costs. And whats more? We're just a couple of hours away from the UK on a cheap flight!

dental implants abroad - the costs and time involved

Here's the email I talked about in the video:

"Dear Daniel,

Thank you so much for your reply, my dental clinic has quoted full bottom jaw with 10 implants for £8750 pounds. But am now going to check what kind they are from the list you so kindly gave me in case they are the inferior ones.

At the moment I don't have all the money saved but feel much clearer now on what I am aiming for.

Thank you so much again for your quick and professional response.

Kind regards

Sarah"

And here's my written response:

"Dear Sarah,
If that's an all inclusive price, then that's great, go for it. Here are 3 things that you might want to ask them:

1. Does the "all inclusive price of 10 implants" include the bridgework / crowns and abutments? (personally I think that they are quoting for 10 implants, possibly without abutments, certainly without the bridgework / crowns)

2. What brand of implants are they using? (listen out for straumann, ankylos, branemark, nobel biocare - anything else is not work the risk) What is the bridgework / crowns made up of? (listen out for zirconia, procera and all-ceramic, not porcelain-fused).

3. How many visits are needed?

I hope that the above information will help you make an informed decision regarding your dental treatment.

Sincerely,

Daniel"

dental "holidaymakers" avoid NHS queues

Four out of 10 Britons going for dental treatment abroad do so to avoid NHS waiting lists at home, a survey has revealed.
This was the top reason for seeking treatment, while 30% went overseas because it was cheaper.

Most people (68%) had dental implants work done while 20% opted for cosmetic operations like porcelain crowns and bridges.
The poll of 7,000 Britons was published by the International Medical Travel Association (IMTA).

Of this figure, 8% (529) had had dental treatment abroad at least once, and men were almost twice as likely to visit a dental clinic abroad.

Older people were far more likely to go abroad for treatment, with 16% of those aged over 65 years seeking dental treatment abroad, and 12% doing so on more than one occasion.
In comparison, 7% of those aged 18 to 24 and 8% of those aged 25 to 35 sought dental treatment abroad.

The poll found that 34% of people went to a dental clinic abroad because the NHS would not cover that type of cosmetic dentistry in the UK, while 32% wanted dental treatment that was too costly in the UK, like CEREC, Procera or Zirconia crowns.

More than one in four (27%) wanted to combine dentistry with a holiday and 9% wanted to go for dentistry abroad to get away from family or work while they recuperated.

Brits pay way too much for dental implants

British dental patients are paying way over the odds for dental implants. The problem is so severe and so widespread that many patients resort to travelling to our dental clinic abroad to find dental treatments they can afford. Why is it like this?

Dental implant costs to patients in the UK have traditionally been more expensive than in any other country in the world. In many cases the cost for comparative treatment can be three times as much as in other countries like Slovakia for example. For this reason over 1000 UK patients a year travel to our dental clinic abroad to have dental implants and save money. Compared with a typical UK dentist, we treat over 10 times as many implant patients per year.

The reason is simple: dental market forces have meant that the dental implant manufacturers have been able to get away with it. The vanity and relatively high standard of living of the British public, plus the associated higher laboratory costs, have kept prices high. But, now through websites like http://www.dentalholiday.co.uk/, the British public is now sufficiently well informed to know there is an alternative. As Britain emerges from the recent financial crisis, the problem for Britain’s dentists is likely to get worse unless action is taken.

The UK price to a patient for a dental implant, abutment and crown varies from around £1,800 to £3,000 per tooth in the UK. In Piestany dental clinic the same treatment is available for approximately £900.

Fizzy Drinks DO wear away your teeth

The enamel on teeth is becoming more and more worn away due to increased exposure to acidic foods and drinks.

Dentists are now sending out warning to consumers of acidic drink such as fizzy drinks and fruit juices, with lemon juice being seen as the biggest problem, closely followed by grapefruit and Orange juice.

Dentists are now calling for patients to be extra cautious when consuming such acidic foods and drinks, the acid in such foods cause the enamel of teeth to erode.

However, other sources of Acid are said to be at fault such as acid reflux in the stomach, various forms of mouth drying medication, commonly anti-depressants, and even the chloride in swimming pools has been identified as dentist to be an acidic problem.

Despite this it is soft drinks that have been identified as the main problem to our teeth, energy and powdered drinks are thought to be the biggest pest to teeth enamel and dentist have advised that the consumptions of such drinks should be kept to a minimal.

One way to get around it is to try not to sip a soft drink over a long period of time. They continually expose your teeth to the acid.

Also, don't brush your teeth right away after drinking fizzy drinks, it's better to just rinse your mouth with water.

Whilst it is impossible to rid your diet of all acidic foods and drink, dentists are calling for patients to reduce their intake of drinks that are notoriously high in acid content in order to protect teeth enamel.

Implant dentists abroad issue warning

Nobel Biocare recently conducted a survey in the US of more than 50,000 adults that revealed around 50% have at least one missing tooth. The American Society of Implant Dentistry (AAID) has issued a warning about the potential long-term consequences for health.

Many patients who have lost one or more teeth believe the personal impact is strictly aesthetic, and, as a result, may not choose to replace a lost tooth, however, just one missing tooth can lead to significant bone loss over time that can alter the jaw structure, cause other teeth to shift, and change the shape of your face.

In the survey, only one in three respondents were aware that missing teeth can damage facial contour, and just 25% knew that tooth loss causes bone erosion in the jaw. Implant surgery is one of the safest, most precise and predictable procedures in dentistry when performed by skilled implant dentists. As consumer demand for dental implants rises, more UK dentists need comprehensive training to become proficient at implant procedures.

Attending a weekend course isn't enough to become a skilled implant dentist, there's higher risk if the dentist has limited experience performing implant surgery.

I believe that prospective patients should pay close attention to the dentist's training and experience before agreeing to undergo a dental implant procedure.

Due to the huge amount of UK patients see each month of the past 5 years, Dr. Marek has more experience in implant dentistry than 10 typical UK dentists combined. Dr. Marek typically places an average of 20 implants per week, with an amazing success rate.

Here we not only save you money, but provide you with much more reliable dental care than you would recieve from most NHS dentists.

not enough UK Dentists, not enough time

A catastrophe will overtake the National Health Service on August 1, the Daily Telegraph warned today: after that date, dental patient safety will be on a knife-edge, UK dentists will not be properly trained, dental clinics will be closed and, soon, patients will lose their teeth unnecessarily.

This apocalyptic prediction was issued by none other than John Black, the president of the Royal College of Surgeons. The cause of the looming disaster? The European working time directive, which will bind all British employees to work no more than an average of 48 hours a week.

Mr Black is not attempting to justify working junior doctors to exhaustion, which no longer happens on anything like the scale that it did a decade ago. On the contrary, junior as well as senior hospital doctors are very worried about the imposition of "legislation dreamed up in Brussels… designed to protect Spanish lorry drivers or labourers working heavy machinery", as Mr Black puts it. Yet the Government declares itself powerless to act.

This crisis was entirely predictable. Indeed, this Telegraph predicted it five years ago, arguing that the scheduled imposition of a 48-hour week in 2009 would cost the NHS the equivalent of 9,000 junior doctors. Now we are within weeks of the change, and the Royal College of Surgeons is "in despair" – its president's words – that there will not be time to train surgeons properly, that emergency rooms will be understaffed and that dangerously ill patients will be shunted off to distant hospitals.

At our dental clinic abroad we successfully operate a 48-hour week; and we are dentists that serve only UK patients.

Dental Hygiene saves lives!

During my weekly online reseach for ways how to better our dental treatment abroad clinic in Piestany, Slovakia, I came across this wonderful study:

Tel Aviv University nurses in Israel have developed a new clinical approach to benefit patients that are confined to their beds. The nurses discovered that simply using a toothbrush as part of the daily hygiene can protect patients from potentially deadly infection and save many lives.

More information on the research can be found in a press release at Tel Aviv University’s official website.

Dental Hygiene costs just £52 with us full a full 1 hour session.

get those mercury fillings out of your mouth!

Two European countries have now banned mercury amalgam fillings, and America's health regulator recently issued new advice about how they may harm pregnant women and developing children, so why do British officials seem unconcerned?

Apart from the health issue, metal fillings do not look nice!

You can get those fillings changed over to new white ones for just £52 per tooth in our accredited British dental clinic abroad. The treatment will take just a 1 day visit ;-)

More answers to common questions I get about dental treatment abroad

While increasingly popular, travelling abroad for dental treatment is still a fairly new concept to a lot of us from the UK, and those looking into dental tourism inherently have a variety of concerns. This post addresses some of the common concerns that patients have about dental treatment abroad:

A. The security of Travelling to Slovakia – Travelling to central Europe can be an intimidating process for many individuals. But all are pleasantly surprised when they get here. Crime is not an issue here, and the people are laid back and helpful.

B. Cost of Bringing a Friend or Family Member – Travelling with a friend or family member is highly recommended when travelling for a procedure like implants for example. Even with the extra cost of another person, patients still save a significant amount of money.

C. Finding a specialized dental clinic – For many patients, figuring out where to go for dental treatment can be difficult. Our clinic is an accredited British clinic abroad specializing in dental implants, crowns, bridges, root canals and smile design.

D. Complications upon Return – One worry that many patients have is dealing with complications after returning to the UK. IN the unlikely case, you simply return to clinic on a low cost 1-2hr flight and we will do the dental work under your guarantee, free of charge.

Emma has dental implants and porcelain crowns abroad

Emma came to us after suffering from an old-dropped crowns bridge for many years. Here is her story in her own words:

"Last September I was given a dental treatment estimate at two dental clinics here in Dublin, Ireland, of between €30,000 and €45,000 to have around 20 crowns replaced along with a couple of bridges and a couple of implants, so I went on to the internet. While it was cheaper to have this work carried out in England; it was still very expensive. I then checked out dental tourism.

There are lots of cosmetic dentists in countries like Hungry, Bulgaria, Poland, offering cosmetic dental work to people from Ireland and England. Then I chanced upon Piestany Clinic in Slovakia. I compared their costs and discovered Piestany Clinic was around €100 cheaper per crown than in any other European country. Dental Implants here too were cheaper.

What appealed to me most about Piestany Clinic was the uncluttered, jargon free presentation of information online and also through email. The cost of each dental procedure is clearly priced along with the cost of staying in either an apartment or a hotel. In other words, there were no hidden extras.

I emailed the clinic/patient manager, Daniel Shaw, outlining the extent of the dental work that I required. Daniel emailed me back with an enthusiastic "Yes! We can do all of that". He explained that because of the amount of work, I would have to make a few visits; and he sent me information on flights from Dublin to Bratislava. I felt a sense of confidence, so I booked my flight and forwarded this information to Daniel.

A couple of weeks later, I was met at Bratislava airport by the clinics driver, Paul, who spoke fluent English. He welcomed me to Slovakia and chatted to me on my way to Piestany. Paul showed me around the apartment I was staying in and checked that I was comfortable and content. There was tea and coffee and milk and biscuits available in the apartment, which was beautifully cosy. He gave me a mobile phone and showed me the numbers I could phone if I was concerned or anxious about anything.

On my first morning Ludmila, the clinic secretary, called at the apartment and escorted me to the clinic, which is only a five minute walk away. Ludmila introduced me to the dental nurses and Daniel, who is from England.

Then I met Dr Marek Salka. As I talked to him about all the work I needed done, he was so fully present to me, I felt like I was the only person in his world. He radiated an air of unassuming confidence that put me at ease. I felt safe. I knew that I had made a very wise choice in choosing Piestany Clinic.

On my second visit to the clinic, Lukas met me at the airport and, like Paul; he too is fluent in English. On my third visit with my daughter, Lucas met us at the airport. He told us about the Christmas market in Piestany and suggested to we take a look around. The festive season had an enchanting air about it. Market stalls served warm punch and other goodies unique to Slovakia. The decorations were attractive and the only boisterous voice was the sound of the occasional bird chirping in the trees.

Piestany is a darling town. The houses are painted in beautiful bright, liquorice allsorts colours. And as I walked past clusters of people chatting in lovely soft voices they nodded and smiled to me. That festive evening when I walked around with my daughter admiring the Christmas decorations and soaking up the festive ambience, young people too nodded and smiled. There is an air of safety and serenity about Piestany.

Flights, accommodation and all the work carried out by Dr Marek’s expert hands and his charming team, including wonderful Daniel, cost between €13,000 and €14,000.
I left Piestany with words like, beautiful, pretty Piestany, floating around in my mind.

Irish Dentists say cutbacks will cause denture rations

From the Independent.ie

Dentists yesterday warned that dentures will be rationed for medical card holders in a bid to save money.

Schoolchildren with decaying teeth were being left untreated after the closure of a number of HSE-run dental clinics across the country due to a shortage of dentists, the Irish Dental Association added.

In many areas of the country the school dental service operated by the HSE can only deal with emergencies and will only treat children in pain.

The dire state of services for people entitled to free care was outlined by the association to the joint Oireachtas committee on health and children.

Rosari McCafferty, president of the association's dental surgeons' committee, said many dental clinics for schoolchildren had been forced close, adding: "In my own area in the north east there have been closures in Meath, Cavan and Monaghan."

"It's an emergency service only in Cavan and Monaghan. If the child is in pain we'll treat the tooth in pain -- if the rest of the teeth are decayed, we can't offer them a service. This is a problem countrywide. Children will needlessly lose permanent teeth because of this."

Dr Jane Renehan, incoming president of the association and a senior HSE dental manager, said there were also indications that dentures for medical card holders would be rationed.

Dentures are a "discretionary item" on the scheme, and a dentist must get permission from the HSE before supplying them.

A set of dentures can cost up to €1,000, and, if refused, the patient will have to find the money to pay for them privately. This will not only affect older people who lose their teeth, but people of all ages whose teeth are knocked out in an accident or playing sport.

Crisis

"It is often the front teeth which are missing. People in nursing homes and hospitals are always losing dentures and without them they can have problems with speech or eating," she warned.

Chief executive Fintan Hourihan said dental services for medical card holders were in crisis. Around 34pc of dentists have dropped out of the medical card scheme, and patients can be forced to travel great distances for treatment. One dentist grievance is that they only receive €450 towards the cost of dentures, and end up subsidising the service.

Mr Hourihan added: "Significant waiting lists are now emerging . . . this is completely unacceptable."

Medical card holders forced to pay for a service will also be hit by the Budget decision to reduce tax relief to 20pc.

Meanwhile, Dr Martin Daly of the Irish Medical Organisation told the committee the HSE is trying to save money by giving lists of medical card patients to GPs who already have large numbers on their books.

A list of several hundred patients was recently advertised in a town with no female GP for medical card holders. Although two female GPs applied for the, list it was given to a male doctor who already cared for 1,200 card holders.

John's letter to Piestany Dental Clinic

Dear Marek and Daniel,

I've had my new top implants now for almost two weeks and it feels as though I've always had them. They are very comfortable and eating is now a delight against the dread I had with dentures.

I compliment myself on making the decision to get the work done by you and your fine team.

Thanks and regards to all,

Piestany Dental Clinic gets Treatment Abroad accreditation

Piestany Dental Clinic, based in the spa town of Piestany in Slovakia, has become the latest to receive accreditation under the Code of Practice for Medical Tourism of Treatment Abroad.

According to independent assessor Andrew Wilby,”Piestany Dental Clinic has demonstrated its adoption of the Code of Practice for Medical Tourism. The process to demonstrate compliance to the standards has taken some months as the Clinic has changed some of its business practices to comply with the Code. The clinic’s website has been further developed to provide additional information to patients about its services and treatments.
The clinic, during the process of accreditation, made some improvements in their information and website for the benefit of patients. The strong points in relation to information are the details about the clinic’s staff, pricing of treatments and instructions for patients.”

For the last four years, owners Daniel Shaw and Dr. Mark Salka have run a specialist dental clinic for British visitors. The clinic specialises in aesthetic smile reconstructions and cosmetic dentistry such as porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, bridges and dental implants. Costs are anything up to 70% cheaper than in the UK.

Dr Salka, who was a dentist in London, limits himself to a maximum of 3 UK clients a day, ensuring that people receive full personal attention and can receive an appointment within 2 weeks ahead.

All dental work is guaranteed for 5 years minimum as they only use EU certified materials from Germany, Switzerland and the USA. The dentist is a member of the BACD (British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists) and The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the Slovak Chamber of Dentists.

John forgot his teeth weren't his own!

"It seems so long ago since I had the work down, but the teeth are holding up fine. In fact, I'd almost forgotten they weren't my own! My dentist even complimented me on the quality of the work, which is no faint praise indeed, and fully understands why I went abroad, given the amazing deals on offer. Rest assured, if I require any future work (aside from the odd filling, of course), I'll have no hesitation in heading over. Until then, give Dr. Marek and the rest of the team my best regards, and keep up the great work".

Kerry had an accident and lost her front teeth when she was a child. Since then she has had to wear a denture and did not feel confident because of this. Dental implants were not possible as the upper jaw was not present anymore. So we made a bridge of 6 Zirconium Crowns, and she had a session of dental hygiene. Porcelain bridgework abroad

"My teeth had fallen into a bit a poor state due to my own neglect. They weren't bad but I hadn't visited a dentist for a few years. My original dentist had years ago left the NHS and I then move house a couple of times.

When I needed a dentist locally I couldn't find one taking on NHS patients. I had a couple of teeth that needed work and , worst of all, my bridgework was losing it's veneers. I was starting to look a bit like 'Jaws' from the Bond film.

I visited some local dentists and got quotes. They all pretty expensive and I got the impression that they hadn't done before the sort of work I needed. They didn't five me much confidence in their abilities.

There's a TV programme in the UK called 'Ten years younger' They take someone who looks well 'lived in' then do cosmetic surgery, hair do, make up and cosmetic dentistry. This opened my eyes to what was possible - my local dentists didn't offer any options in treatment or materials.

I decided to search the Internet, mainly with Poland in mind as that seems to flag up whenever surgery or dentistry is mentioned in the UK. I can't remember the word(s) I searched but some Polish Clinics came up plus your own.

I contacted two that caught my attention. One in Poland and yours. The polish one quickly came back with a menu of pricing. I looked into the logistics of getting to northern Poland which is achievable from the UK.

I was drawn to yours as your website was very good and answered most of my questions in its pages. I liked the fact that my point of contact was with an English name and an English speaker. It's not that I'm anti everything that isn't English but it was reassuring as I speak no Slovak the same, I suspect, will be true for most of your potential clients.

There is a common misconception in the UK that any former Soviet bloc country is at the back of beyond and a bit third world (I don't wish to offend anyone but that is the view of many here) I am happy to say that the opposite is true and I found the Slovak people and Piestany quite charming.

In brief, I liked your website and the English name. You also had information on flights from the UK , arranged a pick up from the airport and would book hotels. These are the things that gave me the confidence to proceed.

I read some of the comments of former clients and had no problem going ahead from there.

On arriving at the clinic I was immediately reassured by Dr Marek that he knew what he was about. I had thought that I'd look the place over, discuss options and prices then think about it for a while. In the event I was more than happy to go straight in for treatment. It was actually good to have a dentist with the time to speak to you - nothing like the UK where even as a private patient, you are working to the dentists time frame and not your own..

I opted for Procera bridgework which hadn't been offered at home. Getting the bridge fixed was my priority. We discussed that and agreed the price, then I asked about removing those horrible Amalgam fillings. Again, no problem, so we settled on that.

Even the dental technician asked me how I'd like my teeth to look. I've not been asked that by any dentist/technician in the UK.

The whole experience was far less bother than I had expected and, despite having a lot of work done, involved little or no pain - discomfort is probably the best word.

During my two visits I felt that I had Dr Mareks undivided attention and he wasn't working with an eye on the clock and his next patient. The work is done to the highest standard not down to a budget.

I would even say the whole experience was fun and I'd really like to visit Piestany without spending so much time having treatment.

The end result is that I have a set of lovely white teeth. I smile more, I feel more confident and I'm told I look younger. All for a bargain price, about a half or a third of the UK at a guess.

I will happily recommend it, and indeed have talked about it to anyone who'll listen. My wife will be having some work done when we have the time and money. It's amazing how many people in the UK have to put up with poor dental care or pay through the nose for mediocre work.

Please feel free to give my E Mail to any potential customers should they with wish to speak to a real previous client.

I hope you can do something with this rambling piece.

Give my regards to Dr Marek and his crew and good luck with your music and aid work.

I'll see you in a few months as I'll bring my wife for some treatment."

Two dental implants, with a porcelain crown bridge

This review received 5 stars on the treatment abroad website by an anonymous visitor to Piestany Dental Clinic.
The original review and others can be seen here:
http://www.treatmentabroad.com/medical-tourism/directory/?EntryId67=34449#BVReviewsContainer

"When two dental crowns I'd had for a number of years fell out for the third time, my local dentist advised me that my alternatives were a denture or dental implants. The cost of implants in the UK is astronomical. I'd heard about much cheaper treatment in eastern Europe, so I searched the Internet. After receiving information from a few dental practices, I chose Piestany Dental Clinic.
From the first advice I was given before any arrangements were made, I was extremely impressed by the professionalism and attention to detail from the staff at the clinic. I could not believe everything could run so smoothly! I arrived at about 10pm on a Friday night and there was someone to collect me at Bratislava airport. I was then taken directly to my apartment (a 40-minute drive). The following morning I was collected for an 8.30am appointment and taken to the surgery. I had expected to have a meeting witn Dr Marek, then return that afternoon for my treatment.
I was pleasantly surprised when, after a short consultation with Dr Marek, he was able to tell me exactly how he would be able to help me. Within half an hour I was in the chair having two implants. I was equally impressed with the surgery, which was performed under hospital standard hygienic conditions. After my surgery I was driven back to my apartment, then when I was due to go home, I was collected in plenty of time to catch my flight back to London.
As my implants were in my upper jaw, I had to wait six months for them to heal, after which time I made two further visits to Piestany to have impressions taken and preparation for the three crowns I was to have. I can say with all honesty, during the whole of my treatment I felt absolutely no pain and the organisation of the clinic was excellent. Everything went as planned with not a single hitch.
I am extremely pleased with the outcome and am truly totally pleased with my new smile. On top of all this, when I take into account three trips to Slovakia by air, accommodation, two dental implants, three dental crowns, plus a visit to the clinic's hygienist, I still paid only 25% of the cost I would have had to pay in England for two implants and three crowns. I am therefore a totally satisfied patient!"

5 Reasons to seek dental treatment abroad

The new phenomenon of dental tourism has received a good deal of attention in the press recently. While one newspaper tells about the benefits and savings of dental treatment abroad, another issues warnings about filthy clinics, bad treatment practices, and procedures gone wrong. As with most things in life, I believe that the truth lies somewhere in between.

My experience in running a dental clinic abroad for the past 4 years has convinced me: With diligence, perseverance, and good information, patients considering travelling abroad for dental treatment do indeed have legitimate, safe choices, not to mention an opportunity to save thousands of pounds over the same treatment in the UK. Therefore I wrote this article to help dental treatment seekers reach their own conclusions about whether and when to seek dental treatment abroad.

So, why go abroad for dental treatment?
Here are 5 reasons.

1. Cost savings.

Most people like to get the most for their pound. The single biggest reason Brits travel to countries like Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Czech and Slovakia for dental treatment is the opportunity to save money. Depending upon the country and type of treatment, patients can realize 15 to 85 percent savings over the cost of dental treatment in the UK. Or, as one recent client of ours put it, “I took out my credit card instead of a second mortgage on my home.” As the elderly lose their teeth, have dental treatment in Britain can devour nearly 30 percent of their retirement and preretirement savings. Nowadays, with the word getting out about top-quality dental treatment at deep discounts abroad, brave Brits are finding alternative dentists abroad.

2. Better-quality care.

Regular visitors to my clinic know that the facilities, instrumentation, and customer service in Piestany dental clinic equal or exceed those found in the UK. Along with free transportation to and from the airport, low-cost meals and discounted accommodation affiliated with the clinic, they save a lot of money. Moreover, dentists and staff in our clinic are often far more accessible than their British counterparts. “My Dentist gave me his mobile phone number, and I spoke directly with him at least a dozen times during my stay,” said Paul R., who travelled to Slovakia for dental implants.

3. Exclusive treatments.

The NHS excludes a variety of conditions and treatments such as cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, porcelain veneers, all ceramic crowns - to name only a few. Rich or cash-challenged, young or not-so-young, Brits who desire quality dental treatment (even one recommended by their local dentist) often find the NHS won’t cover it.

4. Shorter waiting periods.

For decades, thousands of Brits have endured waits as long as two years to get to see a local NHS dentist. “Some of us die before we get to the dentist,” commented one exasperated patient, who
journeyed to Slovakia for dental implants. Some patients figure it’s better to pay out of pocket to get out of pain or to halt a deteriorating condition than to suffer the anxiety and frustration of waiting for a far-future appointment and other dental uncertainties. Moreover, most dental treatment can be completed in just 2-3 visits, as opposed to numerous costly visit in the UK.

5. More “patient friendly.”

As the British government applies increasing pressure on the NHS to process dental patients as quickly as possible, mistakes and "quick fixes" can easily be made. Those visiting our clinic will
welcome the flexibility and friendliness of our dental clinic abroad, where you are encouraged to ask as many questions as you like about your dental procedure. The atmosphere is relaxed rather that rushed, and with our "3 clients a day" policy, you can be sure that there will be enough time for all your dental needs to be catered for.

As one of our recent clients put it, “I brought back far more from this trip than a new set of teeth.”

A satisfied patient in Piestany Dental Clinic

Dear friends,
Daniel, what other way could I possibly address you but as friends after the wonderful manner in which I was treated last week?
I am more than happy with the way in which I was dealt, and cannot express thanks enough for everything. The beautiful smiles that greeted me at all times in Piestany are well remembered; please pass on my warm regards to everyone. Please say a special thank you to Ludmila for finding me the information of the Web about Alexander Dubcek.
Piestany I enjoyed very much and fortunately I had sufficient time to have a good look around and take many photographs.
After reporting everything to my wife Barbara, she has said that hopefully next year we might have a little holiday together there, when she could also have a consultation with Dr Marek!
I have already passed on to other interested people your website details; recommendation is the best form of advertising!
For now
Warm regards all round,
Terry

Are just 2 visits to the dental clinic needed?

Here's an email I received today about the timing of the consultation, treatment and payment. Maybe you have the same question and are interested in my response:

"Hi, thanks for emailing back. So does any work get done or is the first visit just to take impressions etc, then when you go back 2 weeks last all the work is done then?? do you pay for all the treatment on your first visit??
thanks x"

Hi Sarah,
It’s completely up to you of course, but most of our clients come out for the free x-ray and smile consultation and then go ahead with treatment on the same day. It saves them having to come out again, and for most clients, just 2 visits are needed, and yes just 2 weeks later.
As for payment, you can pay a deposit on the 1st visit, and the remainder on the 2nd if you wish.

How would it work best for you?

Regards,

Daniel

Here's what she had to say about her dental treatment in a recent email:

"Hello Daniel,

I'm home now and very excited and pleased with my teeth, please thank Dr Marek and all your team for me Daniel, the whole experience was a very happy one for me the professional way in which you all worked so hard to make me feel welcome, relaxed, and at home and of course the standard of Dr Marek's work is incredible, thank you all so much.

I have had many remarks made to me at work today, such as "you look very happy and attractive to day Lilian" and "you look different today your smile is beautiful more than usual" and "you look so happy today are you in love!" that one made me laugh!!

And of course no one knew that I had been away to have my teeth done, so when I told them all where I had been and what I had done they were all amazed and thought my teeth were fantastic, so they are all doing overtime now to save money to have there teeth done!!

Thank Dr Marek for me and all your team it really was a great experience.

Regards

Lilian"

Alan has implants and crowns abroad

Alan's before and after dental treatment pictures. Below is his dental testimonial video.

Read what Alan wrote on Facebook:

"Hi, i am currently sat in the waiting room of the clinic. I'm waiting for Daniel to bring me a cup of coffee and while i am waiting I've decided to tell you all about my experience.

My teeth were rubbish, too many sweets and crisps and fizzy drinks, i got to the point in england where i would go to the dentist and be quoted £1200 for work to be done. (i have to go private as i work full time, have two kids a mortgage and pay all my bills on time, therefore the NHS wont help me) i could never afford the work to be done due to the bracketed comments so would just get the dentist to pull them out.

With one tooth hanging for for dear life and about to cave in I decided that dramatic action was required. i went onto the Internet and having heard about a Slovakian friend getting work done i googled Slovakian cosmetic dentistry. the clinic in Piestany was the first to come up.

I was very skeptical about coming out but being an adventurous person i decided to give it a go. i worked out the rough costs as to what I thought I needed done and took out a £5000 loan.

I came over on 4th July and had an assessment, i stayed for four days and had 6 root canal treatments one extraction and 8 front teeth prepared for crowns.

I returned this time round and have now got amazing new teeth, i have two implant rods inserted, and have had my teeth whitened by the lovely Barbara and i am due to come back in 6 months time to have my crowns put on. i have spent around £4300 in total and estimate that this work would have cost me £14164 in the UK.

Flights are obtainable at less than £100 return and they pick you up and drop you off at the airport. I'm going back to my flat after this which is amazing, obviously all the flats differ but this one in particular is so nice I have requested to have it again when I come back, in fact I'm going to try and book it in a minute.

The town of Piestany is lovely, check the weather forecast and if its going to be nice make sure you pack a swimming costume. wine and beer is dirt cheap and is more often than not less than a pound a glass, food is beautiful and once again ridiculously cheap.

The staff at this clinic are amazing, to the point that i went to lunch with two other clients, the manager Daniel and Dr Marek, what other dentist would do that.

Any questions email me and I'll answer them honestly for you, I've been here twice now and love it, I'm coming again and if anything is to go by and i can guarantee that my friends and family will come here too.

Technically this is a big up your bum to British dentists, no more posh cars for you, my moneys coming to Slovakia,

Al Gardiner, the guy with the nice white teeth"

Which dentist to choose for treatment abroad?

Recently I received an email from a lady named Carol, like you, searching for the best dental treatment abroad. Maybe it will interest you.

"Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your e-mails regarding the treatment i would like. At the moment i am being in-undated with offers from other dentists that I have been in touch with via their websites.
The varying costs of treatment are unbelievable as are their prices!!! To tell you the truth, it's beginning to annoy me and just adds to my frustration.

Like everyone Daniel my financial resources are limited, so I must consider carefully when choosing my dentist for the treatment abroad.

Many thanks,

Carol".

Here's my answer:

"Hi Carol,
Probably the best way to go about it is to:

1. Choose a service where you are dealing direct with the clinic or the dentist who will be treating you. This way you will get more exact information and be able to build a relationship with the clinic or dentist involved.

2. Secondly, just delete or ignore high pressure emails and calls. You want a clinic who will treat you as a person, not just another bag of money from abroad.

3. Thirdly, go for a dental team that communicates well and promptly. This will be very important for you in case of after care and advice.

In my experience, the prices are roughly the same among dentists in central Europe, so you'll still make great savings and I believe that most of them will do a great job.

Whatever clinic you choose, if you need any non-biased advice, please do get in touch.

Regards,

Daniel"

----------------------------------------------------------

I know how frustrating it can be, but it will be worth it. Having a new, confident smile and functional teeth works wonders in the lives of a lot of the clients we treat.

Anyhow, I hope this email helped you a little. If so, please let me know, I'd be glad to hear from you.

To your smile,

Daniel Shaw

A happy dental customer!

Hi Daniel,

I wanted to write and thank you for your teams professionalism.

From my first arrival at Bratislava airport, Paul made me feel very welcome, and then all your team at the clinic were lovely and friendly to me.

Dr Marek and his assistant were very reassuring and I felt like I was in good hands throughout the process.

I am very happy with my new smile and and cannot stop showing it off to everyone who walks past me, I don't think I have smiled this much in years!

I have no hesitation in recommending you and your clinic to anyone, indeed I have already recommended you to my brother and two work colleagues.

I would appreciate it if Marek could email me the before and after photos of my teeth I would appreciate it!

Once again thanks you and I would appreciate it if you could extend my thanks to your team,

regards,

Kate

Dental tourism – An attractive alternative to the ailing NHS

Dental tourism – An attractive alternative to the ailing NHS

A damning report out this month has shown that the NHS dentistry shake-up has been a complete disaster. The reforms – designed to improve NHS dental services – have done the complete opposite.

The report shows that:

- Almost 1 million fewer people are being treated on the health service since the changes.
- Standards of care are dropping.
- The number of complex NHS treatments has dropped by half! This implies that NHS dentists are just removing people’s teeth instead of doing complex treatments because they’re not economical.
- In some areas people are experiencing severe difficulties in finding a dentist to treat them.
- The number of dentists working in the health service is in decline and the number of NHS treatments carried out has dropped.

In light of this, dental treatment abroad is an attractive alternative. Piestany Dental Clinic in Slovakia has dealt with this for the past 4 years treating UK patients with low-cost, personal dentistry in a spa.
Their clients save up to 70 per cent on their treatment price in Slovakia and they make sure that they receive the best service every step of the way.

NHS Dental patients to get free treatment in Slovakia

The European Commission has published a draft directive which will allow NHS dental patients to seek free dental treatment in Piestany spa, Slovakia.

The proposals mean that patients will be able to buy dental treatment in any EU country. They will then be able to claim back the cost of the dental procedure up to the amount it would have been in the UK.

The move is designed to give dental patients greater freedom and ease congestion in dental clinics with long waiting lists for treatment.

European health commissioner Androulla Vassiliou said: "This proposal aims to clarify how patients can exercise their rights to cross-border healthcare, while at the same time providing legal certainty for Member States and healthcare providers. It ensures that the quality and safety of healthcare will be guaranteed throughout the Union, and promotes cooperation between health systems to provide better access to specialised care."

The directive follows a series of legal cases in which European court judges ruled that freedom to cross EU borders for the best or quickest treatment should be a right for all.

Every NHS dental patient to be given right to go abroad for FREE treatment

Every NHS dental patient is to be given the right to go abroad for free treatment.

They will be able to escape queues and head over to Piestany Dental Clinic in Slovakia for dental treatment and then send the bill to the NHS.

Previously, dental patients who chose to pay for better dental treatment had to mount legal action to make the NHS reimburse them.

But an EU directive on cross-border healthcare, to be published today, will let patients have dental treatment for free with Dr. Marek

The move is designed to ease congestion in the UK with long waiting lists and give dental patients greater freedom to choose what's best for them, without looking at the price tag.

They will have the right to seek any dental treatment offered by the NHS - at Piestany Dental Clinic which would provide it more quickly.

You may have heard that patients needlessly losing their teeth as NHS dentists are "pulling them out instead of fixing them"

Patients will still have to pay upfront at the clinic, but as long as the cost is lower than in the NHS, they can reclaim it in full.

However, patients are likely to have to pay for their travel and accommodation, but the attractions of dental treatment at Piestany Dental Clinic are clear.

Free Dental Treatment Abroad

EU Directive on cross border health care provides a boost for http://www.dentalholiday.co.uk

The EU Proposal for a Directive on patient's rights in cross border dental care provides an added stimulus to the already growing number of dental patients who seek dental treatment in Slovakia.

The Directive will create a formal framework and remove obstacles for UK patients wishing to travel for dental treatment in other EU countries. In some circumstances, patients will be able to travel to other EU countries for dental treatment and will be able to reclaim the cost of the dental treatment from the NHS. Patients will have to pay their travel and accommodation costs, plus any top-up fees if the charges are higher than the NHS cost, which is rare except in the case of major cosmetic dentistry.

  • The Directive proposes the following developments in cross border dental care
  • A legal framework for the reimbursement of dental treatment where it takes place elsewhere in the EU.
  • Common principles in terms of guaranteeing dental patient safety and ensuring quality and continuity of care.
  • Stimulating greater Europe wide cooperation on dental care including the establishment of "European Reference Networks" which would create a concentration of expertise, training and resources for specific areas of dentistry.
  • Establishment of a European network for the assessment of new dental technology.
  • Establishment of standards for e-dentistry, in particular the transfer of patient information and treatment records between member states.

www.dentalholiday.co.uk is well known for revolutionising the way UK clients experience dentistry care. It's very good news for our fast-developing clinic. The Directive will take the concept of patient choice to a new level and dentalholiday.co.uk will assist that choice by providing the most up-to-date and relevant information that dental patients need when making decisions about travelling for dental treatment.

www.dentalholiday.co.uk is the most popular site on the web for UK and European dental clients seeking information about cost effective dentistry abroad. The site provides information covering the dental treatments available, doctor accreditation, treatment costs, travel and accommodation. There's also an extensive and free Guide to dental treatment abroad to download, for those considering dental treatment outside of the UK.

With the announcement of this new Directive we are expecting a significant increase in traffic to the website not only from British dental patients but also from members of other EU countries looking for reliable, comprehensive and practical information about dental treatment options within EU member countries.

Last year, hundreds of disgruntled UK clients left the UK for dental treatment in Piestany dental clinic. Their experiences were resoundingly positive with 97 per cent of patients willing to travel abroad for dental treatment again, according to a recent survey by www.dentalholiday.co.uk

Once again thanks you and I would appreciate it if you could extend my thanks to your team,

regards,

Kate

Our patient in Daily Mirror newspapers

Please click on the image for a larger view.

I saved 3.500 GBP on dental work.

"My dentist told me I needed major work to the roots of four of my teeth as well as three crowns and two old fillings replacing - and it would cost me 5.000GBP!
I couldn't afford that so I went on the net and found Piestany Dental Clinic, in Slovakia. I spent weeks on forums, reading that other patients said about the practice and it was all good.
I then spoke to the dentist whose English is excellent, plus the clinic is a member of the British Academy Of Cosmetic Dentistry.
The Clinic booked my flight, which cost 35GBP return and I stayed in a gorgeous flat for 25GBP a night, organised by the clinic. the driver even picked me up from the airport and was given a mobile phone for the duration of my stay.
I was at the clinic for six hours over three days. In the free time, I visited local spas or saw the sights.
I had the work done in November last year and am really happy with it. It's also guaranteed for four years. Best of all, it only cost me 1.500GBP.
